Was that an elephant?

Yesterday was the first day that we had sunshine in 4 days and it was amazing... With only 2 guests assigned to  me, I decided to offer them a long walk instead of morning safari. This would allow us plenty of time to take in all the small things, hear the sounds and enjoy the vulnerability of being on foot.

The first hour and a half was relaxed and we chatted about all the intricacies of nature, contemplated the meaning of life and debated the here and hereafter. Walking is such a different experience to being in the vehicle as you get time to hear the birds and insects, see flowers that are normally rush past as you move around looking for animals and thankfully get to work off all the food that we have been eating...

We did have the fortune of walking into 6 rhino which were grazing about 50 metres from us. We were in perfect position, wind was perfect and we had good cover so we watched as a female chased off a male that was getting to close to her calf, and then 2 of the bulls started play fighting. We watched them for about 20 minutes and then moved on.

In the afternoon we headed out on drive and got started with the usual suspect, we saw impala, wildebeest and kudu. We then found a small herd of elephants with a bull in tow. He tried to make an approach on the herd but the females were having none of it and chased and pushed him away from the babies. While watching the interaction we saw some more elephants approaching....and then some more and then some more...in the end there must have been 80 elephants all around us ranging from enormous bulls to tiny calves.

All the elephants seem to have converged on the same place at the same time for no apparent reason. We all sat jaws gaping as the herds interacted and all you could hear were the rumblings of their communication. Oh how I wish I knew what they were....

They then seem to all split and head off on their own missions. What a privilege to see all these giants together. Happy guests is an understatement...
